Comfort Dog Team Requirements
To become a Comfort dog team
- You must love dogs
- You must enjoy helping others
- Your dog must be at least 1 year old
- Your dog must be owned by and living with the handler for at least 6 months
- Handler must be at least 18 years old
- Your dog must be able to be controlled on leash at all times
- Your dog must be in good health and current on all immunizations, including rabies
- You must attend an orientation session with us prior to being sent on a visit
- Your dog must have excellent manners and have passed the American Kennel Club (AKC) Canine Good Citizen Exam (you may still volunteer prior to passing the exam provided you intend to take it - you cannot go out on a visit until this requirement is met)
- Your dog must be calm around other dogs and not show any type of aggressive behavior
- Your dog must love people and enjoy being touched
- Your dog must be able to stay calm in distracting environments and unfamiliar situations and places
- No choke, prong or shock collars are to be used during training or visits
- You must agree to only represent Hearts & Paws Comfort Dogs at assigned venues and times. You may not perform any unauthorized visits claiming you represent us.
